Camp Taum Sauk hires medical personnel, office, kitchen,and maintenance staff, as well as counselors, activity specialists, and supervisory staff. Our staff range in age from 18 - 65, with 21 as the average age of a counselor. The minimum age for staff positions is 19.

Where: Camp Taum Sauk, a private camp for boys and girls ages 8 - 15, is located 120 miles southwest of St. Louis in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks.

When: Early June through Early August (this includes pre-camp training)

Salary: We have base salaries depending on year in school and degrees. We will add to that base according to related experience, certifications and training. Room and board is included. We will review your application before quoting base salaries.

Transportation: Most of our staff drive their own cars to camp. Staff are welcome to use the charter buses bringing the children to and from St. Louis during the summer. We will also arrange carpool rides in the spring, for those who want riders for the trip and for those who need rides.

Basic Counselor Responsibilities: As a counselor you will be responsible for living, working, teaching and playing with a cabin group of eight, nine, or ten campers. Since our campers sign up for activities on a individual basis daily, you will be assigned to teach, or assist in teaching, one or more activities 3 or 4 hours each day. You will be responsible for the well-being of our campers 24 hours a day. However, you will have one day off (10:00 am 12:00 am) a week as well as free time during the day and evening and additional time off during session breaks. Exceptions to this schedule are special cabin time, wilderness camping trips with cabin or interest groups, special theme days, and one day per week of camp at state parks or places of interest in our area (i.e. cave trips, sailing, Johnson Shut-ins and Elephant Rocks State Parks).

Goals: Our campers gain self-confidence as they learn new skills, develop lasting friendships, gain respect for nature, learn that individual differences are strengths, and participate in land and water sports without cutthroat competition. We strive to create a supportive, positive, nurturing community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
  • Ability to relate to one's peer group
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance
  • Ability to assist in teaching an activity
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self control
  • High School graduate or equivalent, or at least 18 years of age

General Responsibilities:

I. To identify and meet camper needs by:

  • learning the likes and dislikes of each participant
  • recognizing and responding to opportunities for problem solving in the group
  • developing opportunities for interaction between campers and staff
  • providing opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns
  • providing opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during camp

II. To carry out camp programs by:

  • guiding cabin and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities
  • carrying out established roles for supervising camper health
  • carrying out established roles in enforcing camp safety regulations
  • supervising all assigned aspects of the camper's day including morning reveille, cabin cleanup, meal times, rest hour, evening activities, getting ready for bed, and after-hours duty as assigned.
  • instructing campers in emergency procedures such as fire drills, evacuating the cabin, etc.
  • helping campers plan their participation in camp wide programs, special events, and activities
  • assisting in teaching or leading an activity as assigned
